So Far

Hi, Mom & Dad!
Hope you’re fine. It’s been a crazy week here. My roommate JoJo is a nice girl. She’s majoring in economics. Hopefully she can help me with my math classes!  You know that’s always been my hardest subject. I got my course schedule yesterday. Three of my classes are in the afternoon, and the fourth is in the morning, so it’s not too bad. Tomorrow I’m going to apply for the work-study program. If I get in, I’ll probably be working at the bookstore. At least that’s what I hope. I’ll write more soon.
 Love you,

Mellie

Re: So Far

Hi, Sweetie,
So glad to hear you’re getting settled in. It’s good to hear you and your roommate get along. That makes such a difference. Let us know when you find out about your work-study job. Not much is going on around here. Your dad is leaving for that meeting in San Francisco tomorrow. He’ll be gone three nights. And I’m busy on that new company project. Oh, before I forget, check your bank balance when you have a chance. I sent some money, and I want to make sure it transferred. Please, don’t tell your dad, OK? You know how he’s been lately about money. Hope it helps!

 Love,
Mom

Money came through, Mom! Thank you!

 8:21pm

Oh, good!

Catching Up

Hi!
So, classes are going well so far. I haven’t had any exams yet, but I’m getting the assignments all done. Most of my profs are good, too. There’s only one I’m not crazy about. And I joined a study group for chemistry. I’m going to need their help! Work-study gave me the bookstore job! I work ten hours a week, which isn’t much, but it helps. Dad, I know you kept talking about how much I cost, but I’m working really hard. I promise. I’ll write soon.
 Love you,

Mellie

Re: Catching Up

Hi, Sweetie,

I got that silly picture you sent. It was hilarious! It looked like you had a good time at that football game. And it seems like you’re having a good semester so far. I do have some bad news. We won’t be coming out there for Parents’ Weekend. What with the cost of travel and hotels, your father just doesn’t want to spend the money. Sorry, but there was nothing I could do. But as he says, it’s not that long until Thanksgiving break, so we’ll see you then.
 Love you,
Mom

3:40pm

Mom, I just got an email from the Registrar’s Office. They said my tuition and lab fees payments didn’t go through! Do you know what happened? I don’t know what to do! What if they expel me!

3:43pm

For now, don’t panic. I’ll try to Venmo you the money tonight.
Then you can make the payment tomorrow. Will that work?

3:46pm

That should work. Thank you!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Hi, Tricia,

I’m really sorry, but I won’t able to get together for our lake cabin weekend this time. You know Pete’s never been one for the lake, which was fine. I didn’t mind going myself or with Mellie. Now Pete says he always hated me going to the cabin and doesn’t want me to go any more. On top of that, he’s closed our joint account! Honestly, this is just one in a long string of things that’s been happening, and I’m at the end of my rope. It never used to be this bad before, but it is now. I don’t know what I’m going to do, but thanks for listening. I’ll call you later this week and we can talk. You’re the best big sister ever!

Love you,
Sarah

Dad, I just want to know why. You didn’t tell me why when you called last night. I’m getting good grades, I’m keeping my job, I’m not even drinking a lot or dating. Why are you telling me I have to come home? You told me I don’t need a college education to get a job, but you never said I couldn’t go, either. You even let me apply. I know you talked about the money, but still. Do you really want me to give all this up? Please answer this or call me!

9:30pm

Mom, Dad hasn’t answered my email. I begged him to tell me what happened, but he just left me a phone message and said he’s coming this weekend to pick up my stuff. Can’t you please at least talk to him? I’m really losing it here! Please help!

9:40pm

It’s not you. I promise. And don’t worry, sweetie.
Don’t worry at all. I’m going to take care of everything.

9:50pm

How are you going to do that?

9:58pm

I’ll explain everything when I see you at Parents’ Weekend.
Don’t worry about anything.

8:57am

Dad, did Mom talk to you? Are you going to let me stay? I really need to know.

 9:45am

Dad, did you get my text?

 10:30am

Dad?

  1. An interesting technique using e-mails, Margot. It makes it lively. The father got what he deserved but I would like a follow up. What really happened to him? How did the mother explain his lack of communicating to his daughter?

    1. Thanks, Carol. I’m glad you thought the approach worked. I think it’s sometimes nice to have a change of pace when it comes to writing (and reading, for that matter). As for a follow up? I may do one. I hadn’t thought about it, but I may. Thanks for the idea!
