An interesting setting and time, but unfortunately I didn’t get on with his writing style in Gorky Park, so I think I’ll resist this one. Sorry to hear of his passing, though – for some reason, I had thought he was a much younger man.
I had the impression he was younger, too, FictionFan – I’m not sure why. At any rate, yes, his passing was sad. But not every writer’s style is appealing, so I don’t blame you for passing on this one if the style of Gorky Park didn’t draw you in.
Thanks, Carol. There really is a solid look at Cuba/Russia interaction here. And since you’ve lived in Havana, I think you’d find the setting appealing. If you do read this, I hope you’ll enjoy it.
I only spent two weeks in Havana studying Spanish at the university. It wasn’t very long but I got to see some of the culture and interact with the Cubans. It was a fun and enlightening experience although I’ve pretty much forgotten much of my Spanish.

I love the idea of a link between Cuba and Russia and as someone who has studied in Havana this interests me. Great spotlight, Margot.

It sounds like a wonderful experience, Carol, however short it was. Your time there is a good example of how travel can broaden and benefit us.
