I’ve always avoided her books on the grounds that I thought she wrote very dark stories, too dark for me. But I must say this doesn’t sound as if it would stray far beyond my comfort zone. Maybe I should reconsider…
Ward actually does write some very dark stories, FictionFan, and I can see how you’d hesitate over that. And I should mention that there is darkness in this one, too. But I didn’t find it relentlessly bleak. Your mileage may vary, as they say. If you read it, I hope you’ll enjoy it.
I thought the strength of the book was in the characters Sarah created. They are interesting. I wish there had been a little more lightness in their lives. Even those with damaged psyches can have good days.
The characters are really well fleshed out, aren’t they, Bill? I agree that there is a lot of darkness in the novel. Balancing the very real darkness of the plot with a bit of lightness here and there is a delicate job…
