I know what you mean, Col. Some authors don’t draw you in as much as others. But sometimes, their next novel is a knockout. If you try Staalsen again, I hope you’ll be glad you did.
I hope you like Staalsen’s work if you try it, FictionFan. Parts of this one are gritty, but, I think, not gratuitous (or it didn’t feel that way to me), and Varg Veum is mercifully free of a lot of the ‘demons’ that seem to haunt so many contemporary sleuths. If you do get to it, I’ll be interested in what you think!
I’ve read Staalsen years ago and enjoyed his work, but never felt the urge to rush back to him. Maybe I ought to try something else.
